"Sad, exhausted smile" is probably my favorite expression to draw. All kinds of sadness are pretty good, honestly. I've been all about "tears welling up, but not quite crying" ever since Giancarlo Volpe advised me that watching a character try not to cry is sadder than watching them straight-up sobbing. It's just one of those emotions that is intrinsically not very fun to experience in real life but is fun and compelling in fiction, in the same way that falling to your death is not fun but riding a roller coaster is. On my final assignment for my current day job, my director gave me all the sad scenes for a quite melancholy episode (as a treat). The final board got a pretty positive response and I was like, "Yeah, this kinda thing is my bag, baby. I could do this all day." (Conversely, light comedy and gag work often makes me depressed.)
